Threats to Orangutans

"50% decline in 60 years"

Habitat loss

Conversion of forests to palm oil plantations is the biggest cause of habitat loss for orangutans. Road development, illegal logging and mining also impact it.

Palm oil

Peat swamp forests that are home to high densities of orangutans are often targeted for oil palm plantations. Palm oil is found in around 50% of products in your supermarket.

Human orangutan conflict

On average 2,200 Bornean orangutans are thought to be killed each year due to hunting, conflict in agricultural areas and the illegal pet trade.

Illegal pet trade

Young orangutans up to the age of seven are sought after for the illegal pet trade.

Benefits of adopting as a gift

A WWF Orangutan adoption is the perfect hassle-free gift for friends or family with a passion for wildlife and making a difference.

Sustainable gift - make your impact go further

Gift packaging is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified and uses 100% recycled materials. No plastic is used in our gift packaging and it can be fully recycled.

Our adoption toys are made to the Blue Angel standard. This independent ecolabel certification means these soft toys have a lower environmental impact and higher protection for human health, for example protecting workers rights, compared to other soft toys. If you would like to make your support go further, in checkout you can choose to not send the toy in your recipient. Although we have worked hard to reduce the footprint of our toys, they still have an impact on the environment, so choosing not to receive a toy is the most environmentally-friendly option and your loved one will still receive a welcome pack and regular updates.

Convenient and pressure-free gifts

Order online and your gift recipient will be sent a welcome pack directly to their door. If you need a last-minute gift, you'll receive a personalised Orangutan gift certificate to give to your loved one while waiting for the pack to arrive.

You can also browse other species to adopt as a gift.

Impact

Our Orangutan adoptions are more than a cuddly toy, they’re helping protect wildlife and their habitats. Your gift will support our work to identify and restore wildlife corridors between protected areas. This will reconnect previously fragmented orangutan habitat so there will be large blocks of interconnected forests. We're also promoting the production and use of sustainable palm oil. We helped set up the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) which is working to transform markets and make sustainable palm oil the norm.

Orangutan adoption gift FAQs

Orangutan adoptions help us create and extend projected areas of rainforest, promote use of sustainable palm oil and support local communities in managing protected areas. Find out more about how your adoption gift will help Orangutans.

Orangutan adoptions are symbolic for donating and supporting our conservation work with Orangutans. By adopting an Orangutan, you will be supporting a whole group Orangutans, rather than one individual.

Donations from our adoptions go both directly to support Orangutans, as well as to fund our wider work to protect nature and our planet.

Your gift recipient will receive an optional toy and welcome pack. Learn more about what an adoption includes.

If the welcome pack won't arrive in time for a special event such as a birthday, you can print or email a personalised gift certificate online to give while you’re waiting for the pack to arrive.

Animal adoptions like yours give a huge boost to our work. They not only help fund projects to work with local communities to monitor jaguar movements and help protect their habitat but also fund our other vital work around the world.
