On March 28, 2025, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake hit central Myanmar, causing severe damage and loss of life. WWF is requesting urgent funds to provide support to both local communities and dolphin guardians.
WWF is requesting urgent funds to support our partners who were badly impacted by the earthquake, including the dolphin guardians in Mandalay who work to study and protect river dolphins in Myanmar. The dolphin guardians have lost their homes and livelihoods and urgently need support.
Our new project site, Inle Lake, an ASEAN Heritage Park & UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, has also been badly affected. The communities were already recovering from the flooding caused by Hurricane Mocha in 2024, and after the recent earthquake, they are now facing a water, sanitation, and hygiene crisis.

Snail shells are also blanketing the lake's surface - which is interfering with oxygen levels in the lake and could have a catastrophic effect for local wildlife. This raises concerns for both local communities and the ecosystem.
Your funds will be used to provide essential supplies for both the local dolphin guardians and Inle Lake communities in the form of water purification systems and solar power, as well as immediate support in rebuilding efforts. WWF will also help ensure environmental understanding and protection is considered within the broader humanitarian response.
