As pressures on nature grow, the survival of endangered animals such as rhinos, elephants and tigers and their habitats depends in great part on the rangers who put their lives on the line to protect these natural wonders.

3 park rangers riding a motorbike along a dusty road

But rangers face huge challenges, many of which were highlighted by the findings of a survey published in 2018. The survey was the largest ever study into the working conditions of rangers employed by governments across Asia and Africa. It reveals the harsh realities of their work. For example, on average, they work 76 hours a week, day and night, for less than £7 a day. 60% of rangers indicated they didn’t have access to drinking water or shelter while on patrol. One in four rangers reported they had contracted malaria in the last year.

Thanks to your continued support, we’ve made improvements for rangers, such as helping with the cost of uniforms and training. But we need to ensure all rangers worldwide receive the equipment, protection and recognition they need for the invaluable work they do.

Please donate now to help protect these brave men and women on the front line.
